The next day after Papadosio in Greensboro, I peeled myself out of bed and began the couple-hour trek towards Raleigh and The Pour House for the Camp Barefoot Hangover Relief Party. Camp Barefoot is an annual throw-down music and arts festival in Bartow, WV that features nationally touring acts in the jamscene as well as the best of the regional bands currently tearing through the east coast and mid-atlantic. Their "Hangover Relief Party" is an ongoing series of shows that continue the excitement of Camp Barefoot in the interim between festivals. They also showcase some of the bands that will be taking the stage at this year's festival!
This night's party started with DJ Williams Projekt from Richmond, VA. I first crossed paths with "The Projekt" in 2007 at Camp Barefoot 2 in my early days of concert photography, and they continue to be a welcome show on the schedule. They are soul, funk, jazz, and rock executed by uber-talented musicians. And as always, I'm a ham for a good horns. You can check out live audio here from an earlier Hangover Relief Party in February at The Pour House! Be sure to give a listen to their cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up."
With the party already in full swing, The Mantras took to the stage to continue the rage properly. They bring ultra-high-energy progressive funk rock along with a loyal fan base in NC. First set highlights include a Mantras original "Soft News" that jammed in and out of "Tom Sawyer" by Rush. Also, a guest stage appearance by Bon Lozaga (GONGzilla, Tony Boxes) on guitar for "The Word" really set the crowd in motion. Lozaga would rejoin The Mantras during the encore, a 30+ minute melt-fest: "Pointing the Finger"> "Crosseyed and Painless" (Talking Heads)> "Jaberwocky"> "5 Roads". And in true Mantras fashion, they came back for a double encore of "Magillacuddy" that teased in and out of Peanuts-esque "Linus and Lucy" phrases (and a little "Cat Scratch Fever" too!); I'm sure Vince Guaraldi would be proud. Be sure to listen to the audio here.
With both the DJ Williams Projekt and The Mantras signed up to perform, Camp Barefoot 5 will live up to years past and go well beyond. These phenomenal artists are just the "tip of the iceberg" in an incredible line-up. Get your tickets today, and I'll see you there!

PS. I need to give a huge shout out and thanks to Bear for his amazing lighting displays including this one. You are an incredible artist sir, and without you the live experience and these photos would certainly be nowhere near the same. Thank You!
Having had so much fun on my first trip to Greensboro and The Blind Tiger, it was a no-brainer to head back out west to see Papadosio with ESP and Modern Robot.
The music began with Modern Robot, which is an improv duo of Ben Singer on keyboards and Kyle Poehling on drums. The band plays shows to a chosen film from public domain (according to their website, "These are often ephemeral films: films created for sales reps, instructional films, industry films, and the like"). They record these one-of-a-kind improvisations, then re-marry their live audio with the film and post it to their website. Yes, very unique indeed.
Next, Electric Soul Pandemic (ESP), a local Greensboro rock, funk group, took to the stage with a high-energy set. ESP has been tapping into the NC scene for a couple years now and are really starting to gel nicely as musicians. Always a fun set!

Papadosio is quickly making an impact nationally with their own brand of jamtronica fusion. Their music is highly infectious and danceable, and certainly makes it difficult for me to photograph: I just want to dance! Their touring schedule includes many east coast and midwest major festival dates, so be sure to catch them in a town near you. Really... this is a can't miss show.
The month of April has been a fun tour of NC and it's jamscene that spanned from Greenville across the state to Asheville and back again. And now, it's time I caught up on all the action and shared it here in the blogosphere for you to enjoy! We'll actually start in March with photos of Papadosio, ESP, and Modern Robot at the Blind Tiger in Greensboro on 3/31. Next will be the Camp Barefoot Hangover Relief Party on 4/1 at the Pour House in Raleigh featuring DJ Williams Projekt and The Mantras. We'll then move on to Greenville, where CinderCat tore it down at Sup Dogs in Greenville. Then, things take another westward turn as we look at CinderCat opening up for East Coast Dirt at the Emerald Lounge in Asheville. And to finish off April, it's back east to Greenville to jig down with Holy Ghost Tent Revival and Uncle Mountain at the Tipsy Teapot in Greenville. PHEW! So stayed tuned for some photos, and maybe some words too, but as always... Enjoy!

The return of
CinderCat to their old home place in Greenville is something that has
been constantly discussed since their relocation to Asheville in late
Summer 2010. With support from Lamont Coal and Sweetwater Haze,
CinderCat sonically assaulted the rockers and ragers during a Friday
night that won't soon be forgotten. "Master Mike" set up with some of
his unique live artwork. Also in town were Relish Ink and Greenstar Clothing with eco-friendly designer t-shirts, original artwork and skate decks for sale! Truly, a night to remember.

Sweetwater
Haze, a southern rock band from here in Greenville, started things out
musically with former drummer Cartwright Brandon (now with CinderCat) on
the skins. Following was Lamont Coal and his Ableton fueled dubstep
mixes to get the crowd warmed up and moving. Soon Cullen Seward joined on bass, and turned the jams to a funky, bass-driven dance dub. With the crowd really getting down, CinderCat joined Coal and Seward for an epic "Theremonius Funk" jam that I have trouble finding words to describe. It was the summation of each musician's best: Lamont Coal's dance beats, with Seward's driving bass licks, Brandon's hyperactive percussive drumming, Taylor Hellhake on the haunting and mesmerizing Theremin (created as a precursor to radar by a Russian scientist in the early 1900's, and now produced by Moog), and Drew De Porter and Charlie Nimitz wailing on alternating soaring lead guitar licks. That jam... leaves me speechless still.

After a brief equipment break (and a catch my breath and find my face break), CinderCat took the stage again for two of their best sets yet to a packed house. The dark and driving "MJ" started the set, still my personal favorite, and led into another classic in "Saucerface." A new song next, "Pink Sabbath," brought heavy, deep, fusion-funk and transitioned to "Between Dreams," which is an older tune from the score of a film directed by Hellhake. The rocking first set ended with "Broke" and "Wildcat," one old and one new but even the old tunes have evolved into awesome trippy rides.
The legendary second set began with the newly named "Oddjob" that hits hard despite being one of the spacier, psychedelic CinderCat songs. Next in the set was the new crowd-favorite "Zodiac" and a seemless transition to "Tish Wa." And finally, the most epic jam of the evening came last in the form of the CinderCat original "A1" and an amazingly, mind-blowing segue into a phenomenal version of "Robot Rock" by the masters of electronica, Daft Punk. The song describes well the line between electronica and rock that CinderCat straddles and demolishes. As their sound is refined, it becomes clear that they are fully unique and that they seek to bridge the gap between funk, rock, and electronica. With nights like Friday in Greenville, CinderCat is well on it's way to becoming a major player in the NC scene.

Homecoming Week Round 1

Having heard all about this "New Blind Tiger" I was eager to head to Greensboro to check it out. And what better night than The Mantras playing for the first time at their hometown digs! They've been touring the east coast in 2011, pushing hard on the road and into the ears of new listeners so it was a homecoming for the band and its fans who have had a successful year so far!

Opening the night was Bubonik Funk from Charlottle, NC. Initially, they are a four-piece funk/jazz outfit. Soulful and bluesy grooves topped with smooth vocals that are remeniscient (to me) of Jamiroquai. Their rhythm section is funky and hard hitting, and displays range through calypso-style reggae and a spot-on cover of Al Green's "Love and Happiness." Bubonik Funk is solid and unique, and certainly on my radar.

Next up was The Ends out of Burlington, NC. They are deep and classic blues at its core. The semi-hollow bodied Gibson and legendary maroon SG invoke thoughts of the blues legends, and The Ends do not disappoint those forerunners. Hard rock, hard blues, and then, just when I think I have this band pegged, a bluegrass breakdown dedicated to the fine folks of Alamance County! Ending with a sit-in from Keith Allen of The Mantras, you can color me impressed with The Ends.

And then, the marquee performers of the evening, The Mantras. I spent some epic moments with The Mantras last year (Phish After-Party in Raleigh, Junction, Camp Barefoot 4, Halloween... Hail Satan, New Year's Eve) and this would be yet another amazing and memorable moment. The comforts of home must have been exacerbated for the band considering their busy touring schedule over the recent past. It was clear immediately in their set, that they came to christen the new joint in style with a personalized "Eye of the Tiger" and a seemless transition to the fast-paced banger "Magillacuddy" featuring Brian Tyndall on the bass. The first set wrapped up fairly quickly with the new "Water Song" and the old "Blue Tiger" dedicated to the old Blind Tiger. "Blue Tiger" featured Justin Hardin on the harmonica, which was a perfect fit (really, check it out, that tune loves the harmonica). That tune also loves Justin Powell on the electric piano and organ. Powell has been an amazing addition to the mastery already in place with The Mantras.

The second set opened with the new-ish "Dr. Ssanasinod" and Powell funk-blasting the clav straight to the Silky Way. From there, the band seemed to blast off heading straight for Supermoon: hard rock funk fusion that moved to spacey jams throughout the set and culminated in Billy Joel's "Moving Out." And finally in the set came the second piece of bread in the "Dr. Ssanasinod" sandwich.

As if the evening hadn't already blown the roof off the "Tiger," The Mantras came back for a 3rd set quintuple encore beginning with the theme song from "Sanford and Son.": quirky, funky, and cool to hear that tune extended. The night's finale came long after the epic curtain-call in the form of a lyrically personalized "Eye of the Tiger," including words about the Blind Tiger, old and new. So you can call the place officially open and officially christened, stamped by The Mantras and ready for business. Congratulations Greensboro, you have a beautiful venue full of great people.

Ed Hamell is an artist, a performer, a comedian, a storyteller and, above all else, a preacher of common sense and truth. His performances invoke thoughts of the great rebellious comedians and social commentators of the past: Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks, even a bit of Sam Kinison. He is a great mind; acoustic punk rock mixed with a traveler's soul. I was lucky enough to get to New Bern on Saturday night for another dose of "Hamell on Trial" at the Trent River Coffee Company. Some rock, some folk, some ranting, some storytelling, and some important discussion on the nether-regions of a certain right-wing columnist (who shall remain nameless... okay, Ann Coulter). There's no way around Hamell's obscenity, but in that is a willingness to fight for the free-thinkers of the world. Hamell is a refreshing punk-rock bomb on the unsuspecting folk singer-songwriter world.
Funkuponya is a jazz/funk quartet from Raleigh and play at a musical caliber that far exceeds the norm for Greenville. It was exciting to have them here, and exciting to think that Greenville may once again be in a position to host a more expansive live scene. As the evening crowd filtered out of The Starlight Cafe and the funksters moved in, Funkuponya warmed up with some cool mellow dinner jazz. This was promptly followed by a couple sets of the louder and funkier variety that included jazz and funk recent classics such as Robert Walter's "Adelita" and Galactic's "Go Go." Between the unique covers, the band's originals stand out. The band does openly admit to finding much creative inspiration in songwriting from food ("Mixed Greens" and "The Garlic"), but also have ventured towards inspiration from a higher power with the revival-inducing "Sacred Secret." The gospel rollicker also includes a strong Dead-esque "Lovelight" tease that comes as a welcome surprise. Although they base their musical directions in funk and jazz, it is easy to see in the live setting that they are four outstanding musicians that span genres. So the next time they are here in Greenville, or in whatever town you are in, be sure to look for some Funkuponya!
Lotus began for me as a band I couldn't help but hear about. It seemed like almost every time I tuned in to the jam station on Sirius, there was Lotus with their funk bass beats and spacey jazz rhythms. It was obvious that they were gaining momentum and people were getting excited. But not me, at least not yet. At that point I was still holding out on the latest "jamtronica" movement. So when Camp Barefoot 3 included Lotus in their line-up, I was... intrigued. And then, Camp Barefoot 3 happened: an amazing weekend of music including two nights of Lotus for my first experience with them. I was hooked a little; grabbed some albums, grabbed some live shows... it was good. That November of 2009, I caught them at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC for a rocking show that set off the fire alarm (audio evidence here: Check out the incendiary "Shimmer and Out> Bubonic Tonic> Shimmer and Out". You've got to love the roar of the crowd as they realize what's happening and then the second cheer when the alarm turns off... I'd also suggest "Nematode> Plant Your Root> Wax" and the debut of "The Surf"). After that night, another 15 months would pass before I found another opportunity to cross paths with this "Band on Fire."
This most recent show, on 2/15 in Raleigh at The Lincoln Theatre, would again reshape my respect for Lotus' music. On the day after Valentine's Day, Lotus spread some love to the Raleigh ragers with an energy-filled, funky dance party starting with "Age of Inexperience," and followed shortly by the introduction to the stage of former drummer Steve Clemens. With Clemens settled in on percussion for a few tunes, the band ripped through a powerful set of dance/rock glory, highlighted by "Intro to a Cell" early and "Flower Sermon> Shimmer and Out" later to finish the set. Both jams culminate in pumping, peaking crescendos that are both explosive and eargasmic (audio here); listening barely does justice to the dance-frenzied groove mass in the floor section of the Lincoln. Also worth noting is a vastly evolved version of "The Surf" from it's debut on 11/11/2009 in Carrboro. At the end of the evening, a sweaty, danced-out but satisfied crowd spilled back into Raleigh from the Lincoln full of energy and love... A perfect Valentine's gift. This band is on fire.
Hello and Welcome to the brand new 3RD SET DOUBLE ENCORE by Andy Cox Photography! This aims to be a repository and chronicle of my continuing adventures as a live concert photographer. Music (especially in the live setting) has been in my soul since childhood, from my lofty beginnings seeing The Grateful Dead w/ Bob Dylan in 1987 at the ripe age of 4 (Thanks Mom and Dad!). Since those early days, I've seen countless live performances: Phish a bunch, The Allman Brothers Band a bunch, moe., Umphrey's, etc.... all the usual suspects in the rapidly advancing jamband scene. In more recent years, photography became a hobby-gone-wild and Dad began to mentor me and my photo skills at shows and festivals around NC and VA. Now I've branched into photography on a more complete and focused level and it has become a major force in my life, but I'll never give up my first passion in the music scene and I'll never forget how and why photography was introduced to me. So with this page, I seek not only to document and capture amazing performances by amazing artists on amazing evenings; I also look to share the energy and passion that both photography and music can bring. ENJOY!
